What this isn't: the most complex, technical, perfected album. But it's a very enjoyable album. The music will make you think of the usual comparisons - M&S, DMB, etc - while also making you think, hey this Phillip Phillips guy sounds a little different from those other bands. Really enjoyed track 4 - nice mixing, great sweeping vocals, and nice guitar picking. Really hope this kid keeps his head down and avoids the AI machine gimmicks so he can experience the necessary "life" required to elevate his career to 2nd, 3rd, and more albums. Love that he writes his own music, can't wait to hear more from him so long as he stays true to his ability and perspective. No, he's not the best "singer" from AI but typically the music that plays the soundtrack to your life is the music with the most passion. If you like this style of music, you can hear Phillip's passion in his writing and his picking. Good job, Phillip! 30 of 30 people found the following review helpful By Linda E Marden (Middletown, PA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: The World From The Side Of The Moon (MP3 Music) I downloaded this shortly after midnight 11/19, and this morning I am on the 2nd listen. Phillip wrote 9 of the 12 tracks on this album, and I am so impressed with the lyrics, the melodies, harmonies, instrumental arrangements.......not to mention that I liked his voice from the very beginning; but he is not just a singer, he is a true musician. I was a Phillip Phillips fan from the very beginning of last season's AI, and knew he would be the contestant whose album I would want to own. It is the reward for everyone who voted for him. This being a first album, I am sure he has a fantastic career ahead of him, and I can't think of anyone more deserving. 35 of 36 people found the following review helpful By Elifant71 (Grover, NC) - See all my reviews This review is from: The World From The Side Of The Moon (MP3 Music) I am a huge Phillip Phillips fan! I feel in musical love when I spotted him on the audition show of AI. I was captured completely when I searched him out on youtube and saw some of the performances there. ( I am still waiting for him to do some of those songs live! Go search G&S Experience on youtube!) Anyway, with the exception of a few, and I mean a very few, Phillip is and will always be a musician thrown amongst the glitter that is AI. This new album which I have now listened to 3 times since 530 am EST is incredible. I already have some favorites-Man on the Moon, Get Up Get Down, and A Fool's Dance. The whole album is something that not even Kelly Clarkson (also one of my favs of AI) can claim to have the first time out the door, that is- an album that is what the artist "IS" actually as an musician. All of these songs I can see Phillip with his band behind him singing and jamming out. I hate the comparison, but if you like/love Dave Matthews Band, Mumford & Sons, or any... Read more |
